No. I explained the situation in non specific terms like this and he said he would if it were a show he liked... 'cause me and Dave we're both retarded like that.

I think I have decided not to get it for now.

It was Dark Angel.

2. Canceled way before it's time! Though... it would have ended on more of a high note had it been canned after just one season...

So I'm popping by amazon and I see they have a sale on Fox DVDs so I'm wondering what kind of price they have on Dark Angel... well for one thing they don't actually have it cheaper than before... also Box 1 and Box 2 apparently was not season 1 and season 2 but rather part 1 & 2 of season 1! Now they have a Box 1 season 2 and Box 2 season 2! So it would actually cost me twice what I didn't want to pay to get this series!

Oh well... I suppose in a way I'm glad I didn't buy the 2 boxes only to realise I only had one season. I'd be really pissed of then!

How long for ps3 now? I see Toshiba are now shipping HD-DVD units beating Sony and the Blue Ray collective. $1000 a pop though. Don't think they're in stores yet but shortly.

F HD-DVD. Anyway I will do one of two things:
- Wait a year or two to see which standard wins
- Buy a PS3 and consider the blue ray support a bonus

The stuff I like most, the Sailor Moon stuff, will not be out on blue ray and if it is then it'll pretty much just be emulating blue ray since... well only 1 season was ever released progressive scan in the first place.

But yeah. I'm not looking forward to needing to upgrade my movies and figure there will be few movies I would do it for. Would hvae to be a real recent, real visual and real good movie for me to do it. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars.... that might be about it.

Anyway with the Sailor Moon stuff I was bad. -_- The live action stuff set me back about 70-75$ a disc ... 12 discs for the series. The anime stuff was about 50$ a disc... about 35 discs total. -_- This is one of those places where I'm thinking I can seriously cut down my monthly expenses.

For people with HDTVs the standard definition DVDs we have are pretty weak sauce. I mean it's a pretty sorry state when TV and video games are in higher definition than movies we pay 30$ for. A hockey game should not be the best quality thing I can watch on my TV.

yeah it makes sense when you put it like that. but DVDs still look very good. therefore I wouldnt bother upgrading anything.

but this isnt even an issue for me since I dont have a HD TV yet and I only own about 5 DVDs.

My issue, even if I didn't have an HDTV, is that you have to get ready for the future. It's not so much upgrading now but when new stuff comes out you don't want to be buying old technology when you can get newer stuff for a bit more and avoid rebuying later.

It's like... even if I have a really crappy TV I don't want to get VHS instead of DVD because if and when I get a TV that can tell the difference, I won't want to buy all those DVDs after that.

I figure until they really film things in HD it won't be a huge difference. I guess we'll see when the best of buy gets one over here and we all drop in to see it eh. But for tv shows that were filmed in regular 4:3 tv 480i converting those to HD borders on pointless. I take it some of the sailor moon chit was created in widescreen or something?

Even movie films have to be converted to HD at this point. Just ask Ed

Nope. It ran from 1992 to 1997. It wasn't even stereo. It was cell animated, shot on film (I guess 16mm) and then converted to 480i video for the purpose of broadcast. I believe the process done to convert to 480i image to 480p for the purpose of the first season's release was post processing done to the 480i signal using reverse pulldown or whatever they do (since really a 29.97fps interlaced show still contains all scan lines necessary to extrapolate a 24 fps progressive image) but I'm not sure. They could very well have mastered it from the original film... but I'm not really sure.

There is always pottential to get a little more out of anything that's shot on film given that it's totally analog and there's no real resolution we're dealing with. But still there's only so much detail on that film that's noticeable to the eye and at some point you're just making imperfections in the ink visible which is totally pointless.

And then there are all the shows which are actually shot directly on video, such as the live action series, which is not 24fps p converted to 29.97 fps i but rather shot in 29.97 fps (so when you pause it it's always jagged lines and not a solid picture) and well... there's just no damned way you're getting any more clear a picture out of that stuff than you already have. It would be as pointless as an upconverting DVD player.
