good call, i never thought of that before.

australia is also the name of a continent and country. but theres only one country in australia. do the tiny island countries around australia belong to the continent of australia?

i found a new name for the USA, 'bonerland'

We called it "Oceanie" in school but that's the French term. I know that Tazmania and New Zealand were part of that continent but not part of the country of Australia.

Do Tazmanians refer to themselves as Australian?

Anyway chell out this thread:

Getting pretty heated.

tasmania is one of the states that make up the country of australia. i think it should be a seperate country, but its not. so they call themselves australian.

i guess new zealand is part of the same continent.

maybe people are calling australia (the continent) 'oceania' (like you said its Oceanie in french) because of the same stuff you beefed about.

im sure i learned that 'australia' is one of the continents.

and if australia becomes a republic it might be called the USA, the united states of australia.

yeah, pretty heated debate going on there.

i guess theres no solution. things are stuffed up in america and we have to live with the stuffed up american things.

Hi aDam,

The problem stems from using language as a means of communication.

Example

If youre from:
Florida - FloridiAN
Europe - EuropeAN
Earth - EarthLING etc.

"United States of America" its simply trunctated to ....AMERICAN!!!!

Its too long and grammatically incorrect to say:
Im a "United States of AmericAN".

And:

I love the States. Pro-American all the way. Im moving there is a few years. Im sick and tired of all these Canadian myths about the States being so bad.

Did you know that mortgages are tax deductable ? Taxes arent 50%. Community hospitals dont require health insurance and its no more violent that Toronto - in general. Id say the American standard of living is at least 30% higher than what we have up here in Canukistan.

Have you ever fired a handgun ? Or shotgun ? Id feel safer armed if given the option, theres an up and down side to everything.

See you later Man. Happy New Year.

JB

Hi aGain,

Sorry if my last post was too long. I think its because I use paragraphs more than most people.

BTW, I got this new game afew months ago - its like SpaceInvaders for typing. Letters fall down and you have to type them to shoot at them. Its really improved my typing speed.

Regards,

JB

Hey John,

I was wondering when you'd see this beef. I remember seing you had a US flag pin or something on your bag so I figured you'd have something to say about the whole topic.

Anyway I agree with the whole problem that we're using language. I mean if every country was refered to by a variable length binary code number which was shorter depending on frequency of use then the US would have a really short number and we'd have no problem when talking about them... of course in this case when a country starts out small and crappy but gets really big they'd have a long code name and alternatively if a country starts out real big and then either becomes crappy or disbands they'd have a really prime short code word and it would screw us all up... but anyway that's for the robots who conquer us to decide. Maybe they'll have a daily updated lookup table to avoid confusion. And think about Internet URLs. Every country has a 2 letter unique extention. So many wasted letter. We're like Ents.

Oh well I'm not wild about the states. I guess it's not a bad deal if you're well off and stuff. I don't like guns too so that's another difference of opinion I have with the country.

But anyway as I said the beef isn't really about the Country itself but just the term in general.

Hi aDam,

You see - I have to come back every month now !

You have a good memory about my pin - actually youre the only person who has ever mentioned it.

I know that this board is for friendly discussions only, of course, sorry if I sounded like a prick. No one needs to hear negativity. I wont let controversial beefs get the better of me.

Do you know what my beef is for December:

Paperweights - Maybe in the 1800s when you had a quill and ink, and a blotter, etc you needed a paperweight in your drafty house. So they did have a purpose once.

But they really get to me now. I saw one in MacIntosh and Watts for $349 - wtf !

Take care Man. Happy New Year.

John
