Here's a good link by the Government of Canada. It is meant to account for mundane disaster scenarios far outside of the scope of things I'm worried about, but nevertheless it includes some very good information about how to be prepared for a short term apocalypse:

Good for a handy first step in the apocalypse, where you may have to stay holed up for a short time while a majority of the populace moves on or dies.

Those FEMA guys are useless! But then they still could have good tips. Just because they can't get a bus to New Orleans doesn't mean they don't know how to make preparations themselves for protection.

As I will no doubt not have Internet access after the apocalypse, I believe I will be prereading many of these and printing out things to keep on hand.

FEMA are tools if you expect them to help you but there resources for how to get yourself out of shit seem good.
