To whoever said street fighter was over rated did you get to play it during the days when coin-op arcade games had the best graphics around? If someone was sitting in their living room playing 2-D fighters for their first experience with them then I could see saying that....but...

Oh you should have seen it...the crowd cheering for you to pull off that final shoryuken...

The only crowd I need cheering me are the various characters in stage backgrounds cchearing my on such as "guy who looks like he's masturbating" in the Guile stage background.

But yeah we got in on Street Fighter when it first came out (and payed far tooo much for it) and played it in the Arcade a bit too.

The paying too much for it was part of the fun. You had to pay for the chance to win. If you lost then you lost a quarter. If you won then cost someone else a quarter. There was risk involved, it made it more exciting because something was on the line. Little sub-cultures built up around your local machines. You learned who was good with who and made "friends and enemies" (term used very loosely) based on who played fair and who was a cheap bastard (I started off as a cheap bastard).

The days of 2-D fighter pay2play gunslinging are over but I'm glad I was around for them.

Quarter? Hell man, it took most folks around here a whole dollat to play. I didn't ever get into it until it hit SNES, and then arcades got cheaper fast.

Yeah I think it was about that when SF started here.

I was never too big on the SFII arcade scene mostly because I didn't have much money but, having the non Championship Edition at home, I thought it was cool to play as the 4 end bosses in the game. Hell I still find it cool since I mainly play that same SF cartridge.

Gonna try to get mame working on my TV PC among other things so it would be nice to get some arcase style SF going on.

Mame lagged hardcore if you play with music last I checked. And who would want to play SF2 sans-music?

I use Nebula for my arcade Street Fighter emulation needs.

I'm thinking they don't have a Linux version.

There's a Linux version of Final Burn that's supposed to work well. Just ignore all the gay emo whining of the author, download it, and give it a shot.

Joust was an awesome game!

I only played Joust the once and wasn't crazy about it. I think Balloon Fighers may have been "inspired" by that game whch I enjoy. I'm not sure what Defender is or if I played it. Was that originally arcade or atari?

We had a lot of atari games growing up and while many of them are classic in a way and layed the ground for others I still wouldn't call any of them "best". A list of top 5 sort of ground breaking games would be a different one.
