Well yeah but I didn't make the film. Haha!

Well butchering in the translation process isn't anything new. I think they usually have clauses in contracts and stuff so that you can't really bitch about it but who knows. Really though I wouldn't think that whoever directed this flick would be very interested in the international box art for his movie. Especially where there's a whole remake to be concerned with.

On the other hand he probably would hear about it and I guess would be pretty pissed off when it's something as retarded as this.

Might be okay who knows. My friend wants to rent the Japanese version and I'm telling him I don't want to because of the whole "Ringu" thing and he thinks I'm stupid for letting that get in the way of enjoying the movie. I've tolerated retarded movie jackets before and thought I could get past any packaging but "Ringu" is my breaking point.

"ringu" (for "ring", if you want) became a japanese word who can have several interpretations.
For example, take the word ARUBAITO (arbeit), who came from deutsch. It doesn't mean the same in deutsch and japanese, and now many japanese peolple prefere saying BAITO than ARUBAITO. By romaji system, writing "ringu" isn't false. Name of the book and the movie is katakana, not english, sorry.
In fact, real question isn't 'bout the way of writing it in romaji ('coz american way of writing japanese simply doesn't work most of the time), but why American re-made a american version of a very great horror film in state of showing original version like in Europa ? I think I can't understand it. It's simply foolish... or money reasons... I'm thinking particuliary 'bout cultural problems ~

Did you read the beef? I understand all the Katakana thing but that does not change the fact that the title of the movie is the English word ring. Did you see the art for the movie? It says "Ring". R, I, N, G (no fucking U). It's ring as in ring. Ringu is wrong, false, innacurate... whatever you want to fucking call it. You're wrong. Deal.

It is no more "ringu" than Sailor Moon is "Sera Mun". There's nothing you could possibly say that can change that. You can't argue one without arguing the other. So I have to ask you if you really think that セーラームーン should be read as "Sera Mun" by English people? The whole point of using Katakana rather than Hiragana is because it is used to describe foreign words. In this case an English word "Ring". The Katakana is included simply for clarity much as if we had a movie called "Sayonora" we would write it out in our alphabet because people around here don't read Kanji or even Hiragana for that matter.
